A practical lexicon, providing French and English vocabulary to personnel within healthcare and
social services.

·       More than 3,300 words, terms and
      expressions

·       Technical and medical terminology with
corresponding layman's terms

·       Light-hearted, humorous illustrations

·       Quick-reference French-English and
      English-French sections
·       Common, but inappropriate English words and
expressions that caregivers may hear but
should not use, along with suggested,
      dignified alternatives

This lexicon is produced in Quebec, and includes
specific Québécois terminology. It can be used as
a reference in the workplace, as a communication aid for
patients or caregivers, as pedagogical material for instructors,
as a classroom vocabulary textbook for students, or, simply
by those wanting to improve their second language skills.

PETIT LEXIQUE DE LA SANTÉ ET DES SERVICES SOCIAUX,              FRENCH - ENGLISH / ENGLISH-FRENCH is a Quebec-produced book, designed to aid second language communication between healthcare practitioners, social service employees and the patients, clients and families they serve.

Among the many features that make this document unique, are medical and layman’s terms (in both languages), as well as vulgar words and expressions practitioners might hear, with suggestions for appropriate alternatives. These additional elements lead to clearer communication, and help to put both the caregiver and the patient at ease.

The book goes even further to foster communication by providing a table of the alphabet in both American Sign Language (ASL) and Langue des signes québécoise (LSQ). This is in keeping with new government policies and programs designed to improve services for those with disabilities. The alphabet table includes an easy-to-use English pronunciation key.

More than just a reference guide, the lexicon is also designed as a pedagogical tool for teaching English as a second language. Entries are grouped by subject, enabling teachers to focus on particular vocabulary in each lesson. Classroom activities with reproducible material are included to help instructors incorporate into their lessons the terms relevant to healthcare and social services.

The versatility of the guide renders it equally useful for English speakers who wish to expand their French vocabulary.

PETIT LEXIQUE DE LA SANTÉ ET DES SERVICES SOCIAUX has been purchased by provincial regional health and social service agencies and post-secondary institutions. The book is now being used by educators, practitioners and professionals across Quebec, as well as in other provinces.

The proceeds from the lexicon are donated to non-profit and community organizations, including:

· Coup de pouce student bursary at École Secondaire des Chutes
  (Lanaudière)

· École St-Louis (Lanaudière)

· Project H.O.P.E. (Montérégie)

· The student emergency and food funds of Concordia and McGill
  universities (Montréal)

· CHSLD Heather (long-term and residential care facility) (Lanaudière)

· Comptoir Familial (Lanaudière)
